An online app that lets you link to your VIDEO_TS or video files to play them is Movie Collector Plus. It has DVD box shots and all movie data for you. There is a coll feature that lets you share and compare your colection with your friends collections too. Catalog DVDs, play them and share with your friends.

1. Still no OpenID Love?
2. I have done similar research over the past few years, and I always end up looking into MythTv. There is even a Mythbuntu now for a ones top install. I haven't gotten a chance to try it out but it is pretty slick.

My plan is to have a Myth box setup in a closet somewhere, connected to my network via hardwire most likely. It would be my single point of recording, so whenever I need a new tuner I would just add it to this box.

Then I would setup Myth Clients throughout my house. I believe there is one for AppleTv and XBox 360. In addition it has support to act as a Media Server that both the XBox 360 and PS3 can access and stream from.

Myth comes with a lot of bells and whistle, and even comes with integrated DVD ripping software.

All that being said, I have never taken the time to actually implement the above system, but since you were asking ;-)
