Nice article. I am not a social networking person either... I have a facebook account but never visit. Oh well. However, I do like my openID to tell something about myself. I have tried some different openID providers and I keep going back to ClaimID. :)

[...] 5. But Ning is a vendor too. And just because you just raised $44M doesn’t mean you can’t ‘do the right thing‘. You three people (and your whole company) can help change the world by pushing the envelope one step further - beyond what Facebook is doing now - and into the realm of truly open social networking.
OpenID Social Networking !

I have had a gut feeling for quite a while now that OpenID and Social Networking are heading for a wedding.

Frankly, I will never ever fill in yet another SNS profile.

I started with LinkedIn - il was OK being my first one - then Viadeo, then a few minor ones I never visited again and now stop !

This current SNS frenzy just doesn't add up, it is all wrong.

And what is wrong is that it tries very hard to imprison users whithin information silos. But this approach was self-defeating.

Il real life you are not owned by a network, you own your network of connection.

By extending OpenID with social information (by whatever open standard the industry will come up with) we will put back the user at her rightful place, the center.

Full blown SNS will then no longuer make sense. All we will need will be web application that know how to add value on top of networks they don't own.

Developpers will no longer have to re-code SNS after SNS and their freed creativity will be put to better use.

As a nice sise-effect, hyped-up useless SNS will whither and die as users move freely to services that make their lives better.

Hi Adam - thanks for the kind words. You're absolutely right that this is new ground - and the power of what we can build on top of this truly open network is pretty amazing. I personally feel that all networks are going to be like this in the future.

And to the commenter who I guess works for Ziki (they are a French identity aggregator service), ClaimID certainly isn't about "more features." Our development philosophy is to keep our site simple and useful. Unlike Ziki, we're not trying to be Myspace - we're just trying to be a simple, trustworthy site that solves a very important need.

Do you know Ziki ?

We are full OpenID compliant consumer/provider and we’re adding a lot more features than claimID.

Check it out and tell me what you think of it…
